Around 170 international and Icelandic bands, solo-artists and DJs are set to perform at this year’s Iceland Airwaves music festival in Reykjavik.
Iceland Airwaves, one of the biggest music festivals in Iceland, has been held every year since it started in 1999 as a talent show for foreign record company executives. Mr. Destiny, a Reykjavik based promotion company, and Icelandair have been organising the event which has now blossomed into an integral part of Reykjavik cultural life.
Iceland Airwaves features a healthy mix of local and international talent and often showcases bands on the brink of international fame - artists like Quarashi, Minus, Sigur Ros, The Rapture, TV on the Radio and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah.
The annual Icelandic music festival promises parties, instore shows, DJ & band gigs that will take place in selected record shops, bars and galleries all over downtown Reykjavik. Headline acts confirmed so far include: Annuals (US), Best Fwends (US), Bloc Party (UK), Bonde do Role (BR), Boys In A Band (FO), Chromeo (CA) and of Montreal (US), while Buck 65 (CA) and Jenny Wilson (SE) appear as international solo artists.
Local talent makes up around two thirds of the program at the Iceland Airwaves festival. Among the Icelandic stars scheduled to play this year are: AMPOP, Benni Hemm Hemm, Benny Crespo’s Gang, Dikta, Esja, GusGus, Mammu, mum, Reykjavik!, Seabear, Lay Low, Mugison, Olof Arnalds and Petur Ben.
Iceland Airwaves has also become an essential part of the autumn schedule for A&R agents and media worldwide. The festival attracts approximately 2,000 people from abroad (over half of those from the music industry) to sample the freshest sounds – both foreign and domestic.
