Southwest-Gallery.com expands its current and permanent

The photographic exhibit collection at Southwest-Gallery.com has expanded considerably this year, with a new exhibit added each month. Recently, video versions of exhibits with background music have been added. They add a sense of immersion in the moods of the locations.

Current exhibits include the following:

* Domingo Baca Canyon in October (Digital, color). Unusual vision of fall colors in New Mexico -- a narrow oak forest clings to a rare water source in the Sandia Mountains. Reds and golds contrast with chollas, chamisas and granite monoliths.

* Strange Sights Part I (35 and 57 mm, monochrome). Images collected from Cape Cod to California of common settings viewed in surprising and sometimes disorienting ways. The absence of color and an obvious frame of reference give each images an abstract purity.

* Clear Creek (Digital, color). Clear Creek, a remote destination in the Grand Canyon, penetrates Granite Gorge to reach the Colorado River. The area is a maze of side canyons with unusual inverted vantages looking out of the Grand Canyon.

* California coast, 1971 (35 and 57 mm, monochrome). Images of the northern California coast capture mysterious moments of solitude.

* Arches Minus Delicate (35 mm, monochrome). Unconventional views of the incredible rock formations of Arches National Park.

The following are included in the permanent exhibit archive:

* Battle of Earth and Sky (35 and 57 mm, monochrome). High mountain tops in the Wehminuche Wilderness of Colorado with approaching storms. The turbulent images suggest stage settings for Faust or Götterdämmerung.

* Water Flight (Digital, color). Although the Southwest has little water, its abundant elevation changes l;ead to many encounters with waterfalls. This exhibit emphasizes the diversity of ways water descends in western mountains and canyons.

* Bryce Canyon Forms (57 mm, monochrome). The amphitheater of Bryce Canyon National Park is a wild and eerie forest of stone carved by endless freeze-thaw cycles. The monochrome photographs emphasize the symphony of shapes.

* Rock abstracts, San Rafael Swell (Digital, color). The San Rafael Swell near Hanksville, Utah is a large dome of sandstone, shale, and limestone created by a geologic upheaval. Subsequent erosion by wind and rain has created a network of multi-colored narrows and slot canyons.

* Canyon de Chelly (35 mm, monochrome). Canyon de Chelly National Monument in eastern Arizona features well-preserved Anasazi ruins and 1000 foot shear cliffs. These images show the canyon during a period of abundant water in the 1980s.

* The Gulch (Digital, color). A square mile of territory around Boulder, Utah generally encompasses more scenery than the average nation. The Gulch is a slickrock canyon with a permanent stream that makes its way to the Escalante River through a peaceful cottonwood park.

* Canyons of the Escalante from Hole-in-the-rock road (Digital, color). Hole-in-the-Rock Road is a dirt track that runs 55 miles from the town of Escalante, Utah to the edge of a cliff. An infinity of canyons leading to the Escalante River is accessible east of the road. The slickrock canyons contrast with the dry plateau above. Water flows everywhere with abundant plant life.
