(openPR) - Flash-based SiRFstarIV GPS Receiver A2100 unleashes powerful new features

Planegg, June 1st, 2011
Taking advantage of offering a flash-based GPS receiver solution, Maestro Wireless adopted CSR’s latest software release for the SiRFstarIV GPS chip. The A2100 GPS module is therefore the platform-of-choice for everyone who likes to test and use the new features provided with this software release. These features are, amongst others, lowest power consumption in Micro Power Mode, extended sensor (MEMS) support, or a 5Hz update rate for applications with rapid changes of direction.

The A2100 is a GPS receiver module with either 3.3V or 1.8V supply power. With the highly sensitive SiRFstarIV chip it can be used with either active or passive antennas. For passive antennas an LNA can be omitted.

Supply voltage for active antennas is fed in through the module making a design as easy as possible. With the ongoing improvements on the software supporting the excellent hardware of the SiRFstarIV architecture the A2100 was designed with the possibility of updates in mind.

The flash-based design allows customers to take advantage of this update possibility or simply switch to the latest software release with an identical underlying module avoiding any need of hardware changes. This solution´s advantage is that new or improved features can be offered to the market in short-time after deployment.

An emphasis of the new software release 4.1.0 is certainly a further reduction of power consumption in Micro Power Mode. This is now reduced below 125µ and therefore certainly amongst the lowest power consumptions of GPS receivers in the market. The I2C-bus, a sensor interface on the A2100, comes in handy. The module can be configured to wake up on an interrupt from an accelerometer MEMS, so that current draw is close to 0 while the device is not moving. With a 5Hz update rate for position information the module can now support rapid changes of direction as well which for example can be found in sports-related applications. Of course, the already brilliant start-up times and accuracy were further improved.

These and more outstanding SiRFstarIV features can be tested on an A2100 evaluation board with according evaluation software running on a PC. Atlantik Elektronik will offer these evaluation boards and modules and support design-ins based on its excellent GPS and generally wireless know-how.
