Asbestos being removed from Summerlin Road in Lee County, Florida |

Work site asbestos removal is necessary to prevent asbestos exposure to workers. Asbestos exposure can lead to asbestos cancers such as malignant mesothelioma and lung cancer. These cancers have a long latency period i.e., they can develop decades after exposure to asbestos has taken place. These cancers are caused by asbestos fibers that get trapped within the body's major organs after inhalation. Asbestos fibers are not visible to the human eye and can remain in the air for extended periods of time. These facts raise the risk of inhalation of asbestos fibers. Many workers are at risk of on-the-job asbestos exposure from asbestos containing products such as brakes, tiles, insulation material and roofing shingles. When asbestos containing products are disturbed e.g., by activities such as cutting or hammering, they can release asbestos fibers. Workers who are typically at high risk for asbestos exposure include mechanics, construction workers, electricians, boilermakers and power plant workers. There are different types of malignant mesothelioma. These include peritoneal mesothelioma and pleural mesothelioma. Peritoneal mesothelioma affects the lining of the abdominal cavity and pleural mesothelioma affects the lining of the lungs. The symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma include abdominal swelling, digestive problems, fever and weight loss. The symptoms of pleural mesothelioma include difficulty in breathing, chest pain, coughing of blood and night sweats. Treatment options for asbestos cancers are generally of limited effectiveness. This is because asbestos cancers are often diagnosed too late. Some treatment techniques for asbestos cancers include immunotherapy, gene therapy, radiation and photodynamic therapy (PDT). Additionally, there are many clinical trials currently underway for experimental drugs to treat asbestos cancers such as mesothelioma and lung cancer. People suffering from an asbestos cancer should consider participating in these clinical trials.
