Many visitors in 2009 were adversley affected by the rental car shortages which hit the major tourist resorts such as Alicante, Malaga and the Algarve. The credit crunch in Europe resulted in rental car companies cutting back the size of their fleets, and demand for hire cars outweighed supply. Many people turning up at the airports in the without a pre-booked car discovered that there were no rental cars available.
