Ron Hazelton’s “House Calls” episode begins with Ron’s basement flooding during a recent rainstorm. After searching the Web for basement waterproofing companies, Ron chooses to hire Basement Systems, found at http://www.basementsystems.com, to solve his wet basement problem.

Larry Janesky, owner and founder of Basement Systems Inc., visits Ron at his house and explains that when it rains, water builds up around the foundation and then hydrostatic pressure forces this water into the basement through the floor/wall joint. “We don’t stand a chance of sealing the water out.” Larry says, “What we want to do is drain it away and relieve the pressure.”

Larry further explains that all the white, chalky powder on Ron’s basement walls is called efflorescence that is minerals from the soil and concrete that dissolve in the water and come through the wall very slowly. When the water evaporates, a residue is left behind.
