(openPR) - Fibre optic components and cables are used in communications technology for transferring information over long distances with a high bandwidth. Single mode fibre optics can bridge distances of up to 30 km without signal amplification.
Fibre optic cables are used nowadays in data transmission networks with practically every network standard. The Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI) is used, for example as a standard for local computer networks based on fibre optic cables. Fibre optic cables are an enormous improvement in long range transmission networks, especially as intercontinental marine cables. The control of data traffic via a fibre optic cable is defined in the HFC standards.
The development of fibre optic networks for private connections has been promoted in the last few years, especially in Japan, the USA, Italy and in Scandinavia. Buildings are connected directly to fibre optic cables there. This procedure is summarized under the term Fiber To The Home (FTTH). One two fibre optic cables are laid per building in this type of construction. If two fibre optic cables are laid, one is used for the download and the other for the upload. If only one fibre cable is laid, the download runs at a wavelength of 1310 nm, while upload takes place at 1550 nm.
Fibre optic cables in long range transmission networks (networks covering the whole of Germany, oceanic networks, for example) are operated with the DWDM procedure which facilitates huge transmission capacity.
