Dynamic expansion of airports in Poland
Press release from: PMR Publications
(openPR) - Thanks to Poland’s entry into the European Union and the complete opening up of Polish sky, traffic at Polish airports is dramatically increasing. Airport expansion offers a chance for development that cities don’t want to lose. That’s why every airport in Poland is currently a construction site.
As noted in PMR’s monthly report for construction enterprises, “Polish Construction Review,” investment in the expansion of airports in Poland will grow to up to PLN 440m (€115m) in 2006. This is a significant increase over the previous year.
This growth in investment in airport expansion is connected with the growing number of passengers choosing to fly, which comes as a result of the opening up of Polish sky for international airlines and the market entry of budget airlines. In 2005, Polish airports served over 11.5 million passengers, almost 31% more than in 2004. The average growth in air traffic in Europe amounted to only 6.3% during this time period. Development of this market may mean that in 15 years the number of passengers processed in Poland could reach 39 million. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) foresees that transport of passengers by air will grow by an average of 11.2% a year over 2005-2009. This is the highest predicted passenger growth rate of all airports in the world in countries which serve more than 2 million passengers a year.
“The number of connections on offer is increasing and the number of passengers being transported is growing. The managers of airports in Poland have started to invest in airport infrastructure, responding to a good economic situation and continuing positive outlook for the coming years,” states Piotr Gaber, an analyst at PMR. “Successive investments in airport infrastructure are becoming necessary, in order to serve higher passenger flow and navigation issues involved with a greater number of aeroplanes,” he adds.
According to PMR, the expansion of airports usually brings with it a series of construction investments, especially investment in road and rail infrastructure, as well as construction of offices and logistics centres in the airport’s vicinity. “We estimate that the value of warehouse space in Poland will double over the coming years,” claims Szymon Jungiewicz, analyst of the construction market at PMR.
