Mecklenburg geoinformatics company announces breakthrough success in 3D technology

Fully automated production now unrivalled fast and low priced

GTA Geoinformatik GmbH (GTA) in Neubrandenburg succeeds with an important breakthrough in the fully automated production of 3D models from aerial images. The new software solution tridicon™ ROOF makes the production of true to original digital 3D city models which are highly detailed possible. Hightech technology reduces production time and costs of complete threedimensional city maps substantially.

With adequate computing capacity a metropolis like Berlin can be converted into a 3D city map within a few days. With this technology the Mecklenburg based company succeeds in a branch with a very promising future. “Our software reduces the costs in a way that makes 3D modelling interesting for all users and branches”, emphasizes GTA’s managing director Dr. Peter Lieckfeldt.

The production of photorealistic 3D animations are up to now very expensive and time-consuming. At the moment only a few providers worldwide have the ability to produce 3D models fully automated from aerial images. Most companies use the normally more expensive laserscanning data. GTA’s software solution tridicon™ ROOF, now released after an extensive test phase, is characterised by an extremely high operation speed. Furthermore the digital models are generated in the high quality level of detail LoD 2. For the buildings which are to be modelled, the real roof types are identified from stereo aerial images and generated in the favoured data format. For the procedure which was developed by GTA, special algorhythms of photogrammetric and radiometric digital image processing were established and integrated in an optimised run of process.

Real life in 3D – threedimensional becomes normal

„Application of tridicon™ ROOF reduces the production time of 3D city models in mass production from 20 to 30 hours per square kilometre of city area to now 1 or 2 hours”, explains Dr. Lieckfeldt. “Performance parameters are much better in every way than the parameters of city models which have been generated from laserscanning data.” In combination with the already by GTA established software technology tridicon™ highly detailed 3D city maps can be mass-produced at unrivalled and favourable conditions. “The production of digital 3D city maps of up to 1.000 international major cities per year at prices of under 150 Euros per square kilometre is for the first time in the realms of possibility.”

„The technology is not only important for navigation systems”, GTA’s managing director points out. In the future realistic presentations will play a major role in public security, for example at events like world championships or olympic games. The computer games industry, spatial planning and urban development with public participation can hardly be imagined without virtual landscapes. More areas of application are mainly in tourism with virtual walks and routeing, in real estate and the building sector, in multimedia and nature conservation. “We stand at the beginning of gigantic changes. Technical-abstract 3D models of our environment will resemble better and better reality”, the physicist is convinced.
