Controversial debates about the future of check-in at the Airport Process Masters 2009

The Airport Process Masters 2009 on the 2nd and 3rd of February in Frankfurt reached the high-level delegates from the IT and Operations departments of major airports from fourteen nations in times of a severe economic downturn. Nevertheless, emerging technologies such as RFID, mobile integration and baggage automation promise huge potentials for efficiency gains in the future. Therefore, even with predominantly falling air traffic worldwide, airports are in a position to secure margins by optimising their processes. The conference in Frankfurt featured the case studies of frontrunner airports in order to have an intense session of best practices from around the airport world.

With the newly introduced "Italian Family" concept, econique business masters reached a new level of networking at their conferences. The new concept is characterised by multiple close encounters of suppliers and delegates over the two conference days. Mutual benefit is achieved by creating variable networking opportunities resulting in close business relationships. To sum it up, on- and offline support of networking was dramatically increased with optimised results for exhibitors and airport delegates alike. As Rico Barandun, Head of e-Services at Swissport put it, it was an "excellent environment to discuss challenging topics in the aviation environment".

The future of the airport industry was heavily debated during the two conference days with a few points left open for the 2010 edition of the Airport Process Masters. No common direction has thus far been found on the future of RFID and automated check-in for example. Andrew Price, Baggage Improvement Programme Manager from IATA, tried to convince the delegates on working together to find a common approach. Dr. Breithaupt, Director Global Passenger Processes from Lufthansa, gave an overview of his vision for the future. Certainly, the mobile direction he introduced, is the one to follow for all. How it will look like precisely in 2015? This remains open. The econique experts circle, the online working group attached to the conference, will bring new results over the course of 2009.
