DALLAS – Attorney J.F. (Jim) Chester, a shareholder at Cowles & Thompson PC, has been elected to the Board of Directors for the Housing Crisis Center of Dallas.

Founded in 1978, HCC is a Texas non-profit corporation whose mission is to prevent homelessness and stabilize the elderly, the disabled, veterans and families in decent, affordable, permanent housing, and to empower them to be able to solve future housing problems.

“The HCC started out as a group of attorneys volunteering their time counseling renters, but has expanded to include a wide range of programs and services,” says Mr. Chester. “There are some 120 families in HCC housing every day, and many more are in need of other assistance from the small staff and 300 volunteers. It is a very daunting challenge, but offering help to those who have found themselves in such a vulnerable position is something that is crucial for the community.”

The services and programs offered through HCC include counseling and representation of clients with defensible eviction cases; emergency rental and utility assistance; referrals to encourage self-sufficiency and skill-building training; short-term transitional housing for parents with minor children; Home Again long-term transitional housing; Learning is Family Enrichment (LIFE) drug prevention; and Veterans Housing Partnership.

Mr. Chester is the chair of the Intellectual Property and International Business and Trade Practice Groups at Cowles & Thompson. He also is a member of the firm’s Corporate and Business Practice Group. In addition to his work at the firm, Mr. Chester teaches courses on International Trade Law and International Business Transactions as an adjunct professor of law at Baylor University Law School.
