Demme Durrett, speaker at UNA-USA Leadership Summit, held in Washington D.C.

The Woodlands, Texas –June 2017– John Cooper ’15 Demme Durrett was recently invited to speak on a panel in DC about her community event for human rights education. The event, the Human Rights Walk and Festival, has taken place at Town Green Park annually since 2012 and will continue with the seventh installment this December 9th.

Durrett began the Human Rights Walk and Festival as a project for her Girl Scout Gold Award, to educate people on their human rights and as a way to arm the community against injustices both here and abroad. However, the outstanding support from the community behind this event has led her to continue the event in The Woodlands as well as to start new events in Houston and New York City. The site includes some engaging video on the Story of Human Rights and people can begin enlightening themselves about Human Rights right from the website. Information about corporate sponsorship for the 7th annual Human Rights Walk and Festival, as well as the entire portfolio of events, can be found at www.YourHumanRights.org.

On Sunday, June 11,Durrett gave a presentation about the success of her annual community eventsat the United Nations Association of the United States of America’s (UNA-USA) annual Leadership Summit; UNA-USA trains and mobilizes Americans who support the vital work of the UN.

As a result of the Human Rights Walk and Festival’s continued success, Durrett will be able to share the experience with her event as examples of best practices with others in order to replicate the event around the country. Upon completion, the 100+ events will take place on the same day, December 7th, across the country to honor the 70th anniversary of the UN’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights this year.

Demme Durrett is a junior at Barnard College of Columbia University in New York, NY. In addition to majoring in human rights and American studies, Durrett founded a nonprofit, Youth for Human Rights-USA, focused on human rights education and youth activism.

The Woodlands’ event will be held on December 9, 2017 from 10:30 am-1:30 pm. Durrett invites the entire community to come out, bring friends and family, and enjoy this special event.
