(openPR) - FARMINGTON, Mich. -- Metro Detroit's YA Salsa hosts its most ambitious salsa event yet with the October 2008 Super Salsa Weekend. Expected to draw 500 - 800 amateur and professional salsa dancers from Detroit, the Midwest and Ontario for two days and nights of sizzling salsa dancing, this event continues a trend in the growth of salsa in Detroit and marks Detroit as a destination city for dancers. The schedule includes two full days and nights of workshops, live music, dance performances and even a Halloween costume contest.
Now nearing its fifth year, the YA Salsa Social originally intended to provide dancers with a comfortable practice environment so that they could improve their dancing for the clubs. With much hard work and the growing popularity of salsa, the YA Salsa Social now draws salseros from Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Ontario and beyond and focuses on helping new dancers enter the scene. Many may associate salsa dancing with popular TV shows and movies or with Caribbean culture, but salsa music and dancing have become popular the world over, crossing all geographical and cultural and age boundaries. As the popularity of the Detroit scene has increased, so has the YA Salsa website www.yasalsa.com which has become one of the ten most popular salsa websites in the US, offering local news, dance tips and community building.
The October social will be a salsa immersion weekend with something to offer dancers of all levels. Each day begins with workshops where dancers learn techniques from top professionals. Evenings of performances and open dancing to live music follow the day long workshops. Part party, part cultural celebration and part classroom; dance weekends are also endurance events. Many of the most fervent dancers will choose to partake in most or all of the offerings of 5 hours of dance workshops each day and 5 hours of social dancing each night. That means that a dancer could burn up to 3000 calories per day dancing.
The weekend features world renowned dancers such as Gordon Neil who danced in and choreographed for the 2008 film Mano, Adrian and Laura who were recent winners at the 2008 Nacional 27 - Barcardi Salsa championship and model and dancer Griselle Ponce well known for her exceptional styling.
Super Salsa Weekend happens October 25th & 26th. Cost for each workshop is $10. Costs for the Saturday night Party and the Sunday Social is $10 and includes light refreshments. The Social is free iwhen accompanied by two new guests. The social will take place at the American Legion Post 346, 31775 Grand River Ave. Workshops will be held at the Jewish Community Center in West Bloomfield Michigan.
