(openPR) - Caltech President Welcomed President’s Circle Associates Members to his Home
Pasadena, Calif.—California Institute of Technology (Caltech) President Jean-Lou Chameau and his wife Dr. Carol Carmichael welcomed more than 170 guests to the Caltech Associates President’s Circle garden party at their home Saturday, September 27. This special event recognized members of the President’s Circle for their support of Caltech.
This year’s “Soirée in the Garden” was set to a French country theme, with beautiful linens, fresh country flowers and authentic French cuisine and wine catered by the Athenaeum. The garden–strung with lights and filled with people talking and laughing– was a perfect dinner setting. French music played during the reception, and Caltech graduate student Steven Chemtob sang three songs in French during dinner.
Before dinner was served, Chameau greeted his guests by saying, “Welcome once again to our garden! This is the third year Carol and I have hosted the Associates President's Circle at our home, and I want you to know how much we enjoy spending the evening with the best of Caltech's good friends.”
Chameau welcomed the Caltech trustees, senior administrators, and division chairs in attendance and thanked Kathy Wiltsey, the outgoing Caltech Associates president, for her dedicated service and for successfully completing the campaign to fund a graduate fellowship in Global Environmental Sciences.
He shared information about three new buildings under construction at Caltech: the Cahill Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics, the Annenberg Center for Information Science and Technology, and the Schlinger Laboratory for Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. Charles Cahill, who gave the lead gift for the Cahill Center, and Warren and Katherine Schlinger, whose gift to Caltech is supporting the Schlinger Laboratory, were in attendance.
Chameau also highlighted another dinner guest—Maarten Schmidt, the Francis L. Moseley Professor of Astronomy—who recently co-won the first Kavli prize in astrophysics. The $1 million Kavli Prize recognizes outstanding achievement and creativity in three areas that the Nobel Prize does not recognize: astrophysics, nanoscience, and neuroscience.
President Chameau closed by commenting that “right now, Caltech resources are still very good—especially given the accomplishments of the $1.4 billion campaign—but they need to be the very best if we want to keep working at the frontiers of knowledge.” Thanking his guests for their loyalty, he added, “I can count on your encouragement and support. Thank you all for everything you do for the Institute, and thank you once again for your presence here tonight.”
“The Garden Party was a beautiful event as always,” said Toni Perpall, a member of the Caltech Associates President’s Circle. “I sat next to that darling student who sang the wonderful French songs. He is charming, talented and a perfect dinner partner. The other members at my table and whom I met during the reception were a very interesting and diverse group. I have always enjoyed the Associates events we have attended and am looking forward to next time.”
