Schistosomiasis is an infectious disease caused by fresh water parasites (flatworm or schistosomes). People are mostly infected due to various activities such as routine agricultural, occupational, domestic, and recreational activities, which expose them to infected water. Un-hygiene and certain play habits of children such as swimming or fishing in infected water also make them vulnerable to infection. In brief, a person gets infected when larval forms of the parasite released by freshwater snails penetrate the skin during contact with the infected water. Also, the female schistosomes (flatworm) hatches an egg in the body of the infected person and the eggs can end up in the skin, brain, muscle, adrenal glands, eyes, female genital and urinary tract causing harm to the subsequent body part. The main symptoms include headache, a high temperature, cough, a dark red, blotchy, raised skin rash, pain in the abdomen and joint and muscle pain. It is prevented by access to safe water, improved sanitation, hygiene education, and snail control.
