World Water Week celebration at Article 13

Energy & Environment
Press release from: Article 13
(openPR) - 21st August 2008 - As part of our United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) commitment to environmental management and the protection of natural resources, Article 13 supports the World Water Week. The main celebrations are taking place in Stockholm, Sweden between 17th and 23rd August 2008.

Article 13 has donated its unused mobile phones through the WaterAid’s recycling scheme which aims to provide lasting supplies of clean water, sanitation and hygiene education for the developing countries. An average of £5 is donated to WaterAid for every working handset sent in to be recycled, meaning that Article 13 contributed to providing tools and spares kit for a hand pump in Mozambique.

Additionally Article 13 promoted World Water Week through disseminating advocacy for water conservation and the wider impacts of access to clean water in developing countries. Alongside this press release Article 13 staff added a link and directions for further information to their email signature. We have also communicated information and areas of interest to our team which highlighted the significant contribution of water conservation to the first and sixth Millennium Development Goals; Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger; and Combat HIV and AIDS, malaria and other diseases.

Neela Bettridge, Director of Article 13 said: ‘Donating our mobile phones is a small but necessary part of a brilliant scheme towards a critical issue affecting much of the world’s population. Article 13 fully supports the idea of benefiting the environment and society through actions which promote equal access to clean water.’

According to the Department for International Development over a billion people still lack access to safe drinking water and 2.6 billion people still lack access to basic sanitation.
