(openPR) - (Curepipe, Mauritius) – BAI Co. (Mtius) Ltd, the leading provider of life insurance in Mauritius, has just launched a large-scale Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Programme to support several community projects on the island.
The CSR programme focuses on three key elements: Health, Education, and Empowerment of women.
Launching the programme, Sansjiv Nuckchady, CEO of BAI said the company believes the time is right to raise the level of community activities and make an even bigger difference to the lives of the Mauritian people.
“That’s why we have restructured our social initiatives under one single umbrella that is in line with corporate philosophy – to be at the centre of life,” he said.
The company also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Mauritius Diabetes Association (MDA) to support the first element of the programme, Health.
“We all are aware of the havoc wrought by diabetes on our island. This illness affects one out of every five Mauritian families. And the sad truth is that if we do combine our efforts to tackle this situation, the disease will continue to flourish,” he added.
Mauritius has the highest prevalence of diabestes in the world, with one out of every five adult above the age of 30 suffering from the ailment.
This is why, Mr Nuckchady explained, BAI takes its social responsibility seriously.
“Indeed, it has been at the heart of what we have been doing over the past 40 years. This is why BAI has created the HealthSense policy, which offers life cover and long-term saving for people with controlled diabetes; people who would not normally be afford the opportunity of such cover,” he explained.
Dr Veenoo Basant Roi, President of the Mauritius Diabetes Association (MDA), said the organisation was created in 1981 to support people who were suffering from the distress of diabetes.
“We address diabetes, the most serious challenge this country faces, and we have to work together with everyone. Today some 22% of the Mauritian population above the age of 30 suffers from diabetes. We all have our part to play to fight it. I congratulate BAI for this major initiative and I’m sure our two organisations will use our respective resources for the benefit of the community at large,” said Dr Basant Roi.
With the MDA, BAI will initiate nation-wide action to address problems such as diabetes prevention (through sensitisation campaigns), renal failure (through support to dialysis centres) and to the national blood bank (through blood donation events).
BAI will also organise a series of activities such as testing across the MDA’s satellite centres and start the production of patient’s ID cards.
