Ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate The Saunders Planetarium

MOSI will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its newly constructed Saunders Planetarium inside Kids In Charge! The Children’s Science Center at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 11. The ribbon cutting ceremony is by invitation only—media are welcome to attend.

“We’re extremely delighted with the grand opening of The Saunders Planetarium. Our dream of bringing Tampa’s only planetarium into today’s digital arena was made possible by three special MOSI benefactors—The Saunders Foundation and the Corbett and Krusen families—as well as our many community friends and guests who will enjoy this new experience,” said MOSI President, Wit Ostrenko. “This ribbon-cutting ceremony marks an unprecedented move into the digital era,” added Ostrenko.

City of Tampa Neighborhood Services Administrator, Santiago Corrada, City of Temple Terrace Mayor Joe Affronti and Council Member Alison Fernandez will be on-hand to offer a few remarks on the new planetarium and to assist in the ribbon-cutting.

The Saunders Planetarium now features a new projection dome, new seating arrangements and a state-of-the art star projector—the GOTO Space Simulator Chronos projection system—capable of recreating the night sky from any time in less than 20 seconds from the past, present, and future from anywhere on the planet! In addition, the new interactive planetarium is capable of playing movies, ultra 3D graphics and live videos from NASA.

Since opening in 1992, The Saunders Planetarium has shown the starry nighttime sky to more than 700,000 guests. Family shows and adult programs are scheduled daily and on weekends. The planetarium staff, with the assistance of the Museum Astronomical Resource Society (M.A.R.S.), sets up telescopes and holds “star parties” Saturday evenings—known as SkyWatch.
