Melbourne, Austalia – Eerik Owerhall, a self-taught Melbourne, Australian artist with a passion for Mechanical Steampunk and Surreal Automatism, painting, drawing, and printmaking, unveiled his latest work and first print titled ‘Rocket-Jet’ this past month as a part of the fundraising efforts towards The Art for Epilepsy 2017 Auction.

As part of an edition of 88 that Owerhall donated to Epilepsy Australia as an effort to improve the nonprofit’s funding, Rocket-Jet embodies a new type of printmaking ink that Owerhall created using his invented and patented world-first Non-Petroleum (GEO320
Bio-Bitumen) binder for use in road asphalt.

“I found that normal printmaking inks weren’t providing me with the kind of effect I was going for,” said Owerhall. “I had tried so many different combinations that weren’t providing the effects I desired – until I used my Bio-Bitumen binder composition. It performed just as I was expecting and if not better.”

The edition of 88 took Owerhall close to twelve months to complete, as it required an extensive amount of fine tuning and formulating the new ink to be suitable for the pressure printing processes, like intaglio. The finished print edition was made using drypoint engraving that Owerhall then etched using various grounds onto the copper plate.

“Copper-plate etching is an incredibly powerful and historical artist expression, dating back to the fifteen century as one of the earliest printmaking techniques,” said Owerhall.

The print edition of 88 is part of Owerhall’s ‘Strange Apparatus’ series of etchings and drawings depicting both man-made and imaginary machines, as they would have been made in the early twentieth century back in time in 1917.

The Art of Epilepsy 2017 Auction officially opened on St. Valentine’s Day and will close March 26, 2017.
