(openPR) - Washington DC political satirist breaks out in a nationwide competition
WASHINGTON – Local comedy writer Gabrielle Birchak is a Grand Prize winner in Project Breakout’s nation- and Canada-wide Political Pundit Competition. As winner, she will represent Project Breakout as a field reporter during the national political conventions.
“Winning this is an absolute honor,” said Birchak. “It feels a little surreal. I never thought that being a nutcase on the Internet would lead to something like this. I’m so grateful that the judges and public votes allowed me this rare opportunity.”
The competition consisted of two demanding rounds. In the final round, Project Breakout chose Birchak and Rob Raffety of Arlington, VA, based on popular vote and on rankings set forth by three expert judges.
Gregory Sukornyk, Founder and CEO of Project Breakout noted, “Both Rob and Gabrielle have shown they really have what it takes as emerging pundits. By offering them the unique opportunity to represent Project Breakout as our official field reporters at the national conventions later this year, they will have the chance to gain further exposure that we hope will catapult their careers forward.”
Birchak performs her political satire and comedy at a variety of clubs in the Washington DC area. Additionally, she has an online presence in social media outlets that promote her comedic commentary skills. “For me, it’s not just about being funny on YouTube or MySpace. It’s about using humor to reach a broader audience in order to address serious political issues that concern our country,” said Birchak.
The final results incorporated 25 percent of the public vote and 75 percent of the judges’ rankings. The expert panel of judges included John Beattie, the three-time Emmy Award® winning executive producer of Global News, Michael Scott Sheerin, adjunct professor of broadcasting and new media at Florida International University and Aliya-Jasmine Sovani, a host of MTV Live.
Project Breakout is an online high-quality entertainment community that provides opportunities for undiscovered talent to “explode onto the scene.” It combines features of American Idol®, YouTubeTM, and MySpaceTM, and promotes talent in a variety of areas, including broadcasting, music, modeling, short film, and comedy.
