Kunstmuseum Gehrke-Remund and Frida Kahlo Exhibition celebrate their 8th anniversary

Today, February 28, eight years ago, two passionate art and Mexican culture lovers opened the doors of their newly founded private Museum to all the visitors queuing outside the old factory building turned into Museum in Baden-Baden.
Eight years ago, the exhibition shown in the Museum contained a total of 100 replicas of the paintings of the world famous artist Frida Kahlo, 10 photos, 5 Mexican dresses as Frida used to wear and over 20 Maya and Aztec artifacts.
From the inception the exhibition concept was to show, in a permanent setting, the work and life of Frida Kahlo through her paintings as replicas.
The paintings are licensed replicas from © Banco de Mexico, Diego Rivera & Frida Kahlo Museums Trust / VG Bild-Kunst, Bonn, 2008; the Museum was and is worldwide the only holder of such permission to replicate all the known works of the Mexican artist.

Over the years the Museum founders have added to their collection so that today the Museum counts over 2000 exhibits, including entire rooms of the Blue House reconstructed from vintage photos to the smallest detail.
Today the exhibition shows more than 30 Mexican dresses, a Mexican rebozo (scarf) dated ca.1827, two photographs from Nickolas Muray from the Nikolas Muray Archives and over 150 photos of Frida, her family, her friends, and Mexico between 1900 to 1950.

During the years in Baden-Baden and in the US, the Museum and the Frida Kahlo exhibition were the preferred place for schools visits, families Sunday outings, first dates and, following the trail of love, even for a surprise marriage proposal, an actual wedding and a married couple for 23 years, finally bought their first wedding rings in the museum shop for $4 each.
All these events, and many more, happened under the vigilant, penetrating, mysterious eyes of Frida Kahlo looking from the paintings.

This year, the 8th anniversary of the opening of the Museum will be celebrated in the new Museum rooms in Baden-Baden; since June 2015 most of the Kunstmuseum exhibits and Frida’s story can be seen in the Löw Tile Factory in Baden-Oos, Germany.

The Kunstmuseum Gehrke-Remund is a privately owned monographic art museum founded in 2008. The Kunstmuseum exhibits the works of Frida Kahlo. The objective of the Kunstmuseum Gehrke-Remund is to offer the visitors a complete view of the entire work of the Mexican artist, thus allowing to follow Kahlo’s development from the very early works to her maturity. In addition to exhibit the artworks, the Kunstmuseum Gehrke-Remund shows the cultural and historical environment of Frida Kahlo’s life and times in Mexico: Tehuana Huipiles (blouses) and dresses, jewelry, pre-columbian sculptures, Mexican votive paintings and the entire context in which the artist lived and produced her work. This 360°view of Kahlo’s life and work allows the visitors to totally immerse themselves into the artworks and to better understand the artist and the Mexican history and culture.

The founders of the Art Museum are Hans-Jürgen Gehrke and Prof. Dr. Mariella C. Remund. Both are art patrons, collectors and passionate art historians.
They have spent over 25 years in executive positions in multinational corporations and academic organizations in Germany, Italy, France, Switzerland, USA, Spain, Mexico, South America and China.
