Associations & Organizations
Press release from: The Stennis Foundation
(openPR) - The Stennis Foundation, a nationwide 501c3 nonprofit organization based in Amarillo, Texas, will be the recipient of funds raised at the “One Step Closer” Walk for Leukodystrophy. The Walk will be held on Saturday, May 17, 2008, at Lombardi Field at Old Bridge High School. Sign-in and late registration begins at 12:00 noon; the walk begins at 1:00 p.m. Proceeds from this event will be used to fund Leukodystrophies research. Registration fee is $10 which includes a t-shirt. Online registration is now open at www.stennisfoundation.org.

The Walk is intended to honor those who are affected by a Leukodystrophy, including Eric Brown; Anthony, Matthew, and Laura Grace Tomaino; Ashleigh Ryann Gwin; Peter Jacob Christiansen; Warren Joseph Alexander III; Reese Behnken; Lucas Viscomi; Christopher Braden Jones; Jared Kerr; Dawn Bjornsen; Dr. Stephen Massood; and Nicky Villalobos, all from New Jersey.

The Leukodystrophies are a group of rare brain-degenerative diseases that strip away myelin, the insulated covering of nerves in the brain. Prognosis for these diseases depends on the specific type of Leukodystrophy. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive, and can include medications, various therapies, and possible bone marrow transplantation. Government funding for research is limited, so it is important to provide funding for research to find a cure for these diseases.

For additional information regarding the Leukodystrophies, or to register for the upcoming “One Step Closer” Walk for Leukodystrophy, log on to www.stennisfoundation.org.
