A U.K. true crime author has launched a new blog about poker. It covers his personal experiences, the tactics of leading players and highlights the often wild and eccentric individuals who have been associated with the game since its beginnings on the Mississippi riverboats in the early 19th century.

"I set up the poker blog because I've got a hell of a lot of stories to tell about the wild, crazy dog players who inhabit the world of poker," says Shreeve, a British journalist and author of "Cannibals" (Blake 2008) and "Blood Rites" (2006).

Shreeve believes a very definite state of mind is needed to win at poker. "It's about adopting a zen-like mindset and allowing your subconscious mind to help you make the right moves."

Shreeve was taught to play poker as a boy by his father, Ted Shreeve, who died in 2007 at the age of ninety-seven. He in turn learnt the game from U.S. airmen and members of the Mafia during stints in Italy and North Africa during World War 2.

But as Shreeve relates on his blog, playing poker can be a dangerous activity. "Back in the 1980s I was living in Bristol and got involved in a game with a local gangster. He spilled out a bag full of cocaine and we got down to a game of five-card draw."

By the early hours of the morning a lot of money was riding on the game.

"By some fluke, I ended up with a full house - three aces and two eights - which beat the gangster's three-of-a-kind [kings]," says Shreeve. "I took the pot. But two days later I was walking home in broad daylight when a big car screeched up beside me. The passenger door flew open and I was dragged inside - it was the gangster..."

Shreeve says he started saying his prayers. "I thought I was doomed. But then the gangster says, 'Hey Jimmy, I thought I'd give you a lift home - do you fancy another game of poker?'"

Shreeve's poker blog is aimed at beginners and advanced players alike and can be found at www.jimmyleeshreeve.com/poker-blog/.
