(openPR) - At the recent .aero council (DAC) meeting, it was recommended that SITA release 3-letter airport codes (location identifiers) – which have been reserved exclusively for airport use since 2002 – for registration by eligible members of the aviation community on a first-come-first-served basis. As a result, airports have a limited time to register their respective codes as aero-domains.
The reserved 3-letter airport codes at www.domainregistry.de/codes.txt if unclaimed, would be released for registration as aero-domains since December 1st, 2008.
Codes which have already been registered as aero-domains, or which cannot be registered as a due to contractual obligations between SITA and ICANN will not be released as part of this process.
To date, over 150 airports, including Dublin , Las Vegas , Geneva, Prague and Sydney have adopted this simple and memorable approach.
This process of release will be done in parallel with the release of other reserved names.
Airlines can also register their two-letter industrial codes as aero-domains. Aero is one of very rare Top Level Domains, which permits the registration of two-character domain names.
