Estrada Hosts 19th Annual GLAAD Media Awards, Cruz Honored

Christine Chavez, granddaughter of Cesar Chavez, presented a Special Recognition Award to the social justice magazine “The Intelligence Report.” Other presenters included Teresa Rodriguez of “Aqui y Ahora,” Jai Rodriguez of “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy,” Frank Cairo of “Paparazzi TV,” and Judge David Young. Celebrities included Dan Renzi of MTV’s “The Real World: Miami” and Reggaeton singer Ivy Queen.
Estrada, who appeared in various hairstyles throughout the evening, presented the award for Mejor Novela (Outstanding Novela) with celebrity talk show host Grenys J of “In Fraganti” to Pablo Portillo and Alonso Espeleta of “Pecados Ajenos” (Telemundo).
“The 19th Annual GLAAD Media Awards gets jaded,” raves GayNewsBits.com. Edmund Tijerina of the San Antonio Express-News calls him "Mr. Emcee."
Estrada has been featured on “The Graham Norton Effect” on Comedy Central and “30 Rock” on NBC. His music can be heard on “The Shield” on the FX Network.
The former Charo choreographer and scratch vocalist for the Back Street Boys has been known for his highly acclaimed solo theatre shows including “Tortilla Heaven” and “ICONS.” Estrada recently opened his tenth solo show “Chek It, Baby: A Fabulous Explanation of Anton Chekhov’s Fiercest Plays” at the Twin Cities Chekhov Festival in Minneapolis.
Estrada also lent his golden voice to the Human Rights Campaign’s National Coming Out Day Project “Being Out Rocks” CD compilation along with Sarah McLachlan, Cyndi Lauper and other stars.
In October 2006, Kentucky Governor Ernie Fletcher paid tribute to Estrada by commissioning him the title of "Kentucky Colonel," the highest honor awarded by the Commonwealth of Kentucky that acknowledges outstanding ambassadors of goodwill and fellowship around the world. The Texas native joined other honorary colonels which include Winston Churchill, Ronald Reagan, Bob Hope, Joan Crawford, Johnny Depp, Muhammad Ali and Pope John Paul II.
Estrada recently released his very own designer humor line of bilingual greeting cards, “Jade Esteban Estrada for Nos Vemos Greetings.”
He appears in the upcoming films “The Innocent Killers,” “Callous,” and “Crosshairs.”
