New Tool CivicInk Makes Contacting Your Elected Officials Easy

Chicago based activists launch political action tool to help voters reach their elected officials

Chicago based activists and siblings, Ali Barthwell and David Barthwell, launched CivicInk (https://civic.ink), a web-based subscription service, on January 6, 2016 to help fellow citizens and voters increase political engagement.

For an eight dollar monthly fee, CivicInk sends one physical, personalized letter a month to each user’s elected Senators and House Representatives. CivicInk letters are customized to each subscriber in their name, and advocate for the political and social causes that users select. For example, if a user in Illinois is passionate about reproductive rights, a customized letter might be sent to Senator Mark Kirk advocating against defunding Planned Parenthood.

The service is accepting sign-ups now and will begin sending letters to elected officials after the inauguration on January 20, 2016. The letters are coordinated into campaigns and scheduled to achieve maximum political impact. “I wanted to help create a way to turn generic, online political activism into sustained, targeted civic engagement,” says David Barthwell.

“After the recent presidential election, there was a palpable feeling of shock and frustration along with a real need to regroup and become more active than ever,” said Ali Barthwell. “We wanted to create a way to organize an ongoing and impactful letter-writing campaign to remain engaged in the political process and help effect real change.”

Ali and David Barthwell are African-American, siblings, and activists from Chicago, IL. Ali attended Wellesley University and is a satirical writer and performer. She is a staff writer for Cards Against Humanity, and writes for Vulture and The A.V. Club as a TV reviewer. Ali also was a member of The Second City Touring Company. David attended Yale University and is a graphic designer, web developer, and entrepreneur. He is the founder and president of Verge Graphics.
