9 years old morbidly obese male child Anas Shekh from Surat has been operated for Bariatric surgery in the month of August this year. The surgery was done by Dr.Sanjay Patolia , Director & Bariatric Surgeon, at Asian Bariatrics Hospital, Ahmedabad.

The child weighed 3.5 kg at birth. After the age of 3 years, there was an abnormal weight gain of approximately 15 kg per year and by 9 years he was 107 kg with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 90 th percentile on growth chart. Generally, children of this age are usually 25-30kg of weight. “Anas complained of snoring, breathlessness, lethargy and bed wetting with further incidence weight progression. We were amazed to see his intake volume, he almost ate like an adult”, said Anas father. “We took treatment from endocrinologist of Mumbai & Surat for 2 long years, but it was in vain. Later, we heard about Bariatric Surgery and met Dr Sanjay Patolia on 22nd August and decided of surgery, and there we are with a wonderful loss of 18 kg in last 1.5 month,” added Anas Mother.

Sharing details of the surgery, Dr.Sanjay Patolia said, “the prevalence of childhood obesity has shown an increase of almost 50% in last two decades. We did Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy, a bariatric procedure on Anas. We were clear that dietary modifications and lifestyle management alone is not an answer for him and he needed surgical support to bring up metabolic changes. Soon after surgery we saw a drastic regression in weight and complications like dysponea, snoring, nocturnal urine incontinence and the child seemed to be gaining confidence.

“The parents are offered nutritional and lifestyle improvement education by our expert team. We are sure that Anas and many other children can be helped with Bariatric surgery, if noticed at the correct time, as we should not forget that Obesity is a metabolic disease, said Dr. Mahendra Narwaria, Director & Bariatric Surgeon, Asian Bariatrics.
