The American Architecture Awards Honor the Renovations of

Los Angeles-area, CA, September 6, 2016 -- The John Anson Ford Amphitheatre renovation by Levin & Associates Architects, and Kelly Sutherlin McLeod Architecture restorations of the Olan G. and Aida T. Hafley House and the Killingsworth Office Building recently received national recognition by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies. The three projects received the 2016 American Architecture Award. Now in its 22nd year, the American Architecture Awards are the nation’s highest public awards given by a non-commercial, non-trade affiliated, public arts, culture and educational institution. Structural Focus is honored to partner with these renowned architects on the renovation of these iconic structures.

Structural Focus is working with Levin & Associates and Los Angeles County in the $20 million renovation of the historic John Anson Ford Amphitheatre. The goal is to rehabilitate and improve the complex while protecting its historic integrity and status. New facilities and amenities were also added within the current boundaries of the Ford Theatres property to enhance onsite programs and spaces.

Kelly Sutherlin McLeod Architecture and Structural Focus collaborated on the historic preservation of the Olan G. and Aida T. Hafley House. Original construction documents, correspondence, and field notes from Neutra were used to restore this beautiful mid-century modern landmark. Neutra structures are visibly simple buildings and require a very surgical approach to structural strengthening. Structural Focus was able to help achieve the project’s goal of structural integrity by “invisible” methods. The updated structural work is hidden and the house will perform better during the next earthquake.

The 1955 Killingsworth Office Building serves as the home office of the Kelly Sutherlin McLeod Architecture practice. Structural Focus has been providing structural engineering services for the restoration of this locally designated landmark. KMSA is focused on maintaining the authenticity of this modern treasure listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

A quote from Christian Narkiewicz-Laine, Museum President, The Chicago Athenaeum about the 2016 American Architecture Award, “The selected buildings and urban planning projects uniquely and sensitively reconcile the principles underlying architectural design with the rapid technological advancements and the modernization of our society today. This year, there was a considerable emphasis on restoration, renovation, and adaptive re-use as the Green Revolution continues to impact our cities and our buildings in which we live, work, pray, and become culturally refined.”
