Calcium Metal Market
Calcium metal is a silver-white crystal with a slightly soft texture and active chemical properties. It can form an oxide (calcium oxide) or nitride film (calcium nitride) on the surface in the air to prevent continued corrosion.
Calcium Metal covers granules, blocks, flakes, wire, etc shapes.
Calcium metal is primarily produced through two main methods: electrolytic production and thermal reduction.
Electrolytic Production:
In this method, calcium is obtained by the electrolysis of a calcium chloride or calcium fluoride solution.
The process involves passing an electric current through a molten calcium chloride or calcium fluoride electrolyte, causing the calcium ions to migrate towards the cathode (negative electrode).
At the cathode, reduction occurs, and metallic calcium is deposited.
This method ensures high purity calcium production.
Thermal Reduction:
The thermal reduction method involves reducing calcium compounds, such as calcium oxide (lime) or calcium carbonate, using a reducing agent such as aluminum, carbon, or magnesium.
Lime-Reduction Method: In this variant, calcium oxide (lime) is mixed with aluminum powder and heated in a high-temperature furnace. The aluminum acts as the reducing agent, reacting with the lime to produce calcium metal.
Carbon-Reduction Method: Another variant involves heating a mixture of calcium carbonate and carbon in a furnace. The carbon reduces the calcium carbonate, leading to the formation of calcium oxide and carbon dioxide. Subsequently, the calcium oxide reacts with more carbon to yield elemental calcium.
Magnesium-Reduction Method: Calcium oxide can also be reduced by magnesium in a similar manner. The reaction between magnesium and calcium oxide produces calcium metal along with magnesium oxide.
More production adopts thermal reduction method in recently years.
Calcium metal can be used as alloy oil dehydrating agent, metallurgical reducing agent, deoxidizing agent, etc. It is mainly used in steel, metallurgy, chemical, pharmaceutical etc fields.
Global key players of Calcium Metal include Hebi Haideli Metal Products, Hebi Changhong Magnesium Industry and Hanzhong Zinc Special Materials, etc. The top three players hold a share over 30%. China is the largest market, has a share about 72%. In terms of product type, Purity ≥98.5% is the largest segment, occupied for a share of about 55%, and in terms of application, Steel has a share about 39 percent.
