ISO 26262 Classification Kit available for MES Model Examiner®.

July 4, 2016, Berlin (Germany): The ISO 26262 Classification Kit for MES Model Examiner® is a convenient solution for tool classification developed by the Berlin-based software company Model Engineering Solutions (MES) in cooperation with samoconsult GmbH. The additional component of MES Model Examiner® simplifies safeguarding the software tool in compliance with ISO 26262 and provides an optimal solution to manage guideline checks and tool classification within a single framework.

Tool qualification to safeguard safety-critical software development

Safety-critical software and systems are developed in compliance with the ISO 26262 standard in the automotive industry. ISO 26262-8 covers cross-functional processes for developing safety-critical software. Section 11 stipulates the use of a two-stage framework for safeguarding software tools used in the development process. The aim of these measures is that the user can rely on the accuracy of the results generated by the tool. The first step of this framework is the tool classification (also Confidence Level Evaluation); the second is the tool qualification. Users can cover the first step with the ISO 26262 Classification Kit for MES Model Examiner® conveniently. It includes all analysis steps required by ISO 26262 and provides checklists for the guided evaluation of all applied measures of use cases, potential errors, error prevention, and error detection measures, up to tool qualification. Thus the user can be sure that evaluation with the ISO 26262 Classification Kit for MES Model Examiner® is comprehensive. The acquired data automatically defines the Tool Confidence Level (TCL) for usage in the development environment. The end result is tool classification according to TCL1, TCL2, and TCL3 in compliance with ISO 26262.

Implementation at ZF Friedrichshafen AG

ZF Friedrichshafen is using the ISO 26262 Classification Kit for MES Model Examiner® for the classification of its software tools. “The Classification Kit greatly facilitates determining Tool Confidence Levels at ZF Friedrichshafen. The structure includes our use cases and measures, so that we only have to provide the measures carried out for a project, which automatically determine TCL levels. This provides enormous added value for us, as well as being a huge time saver for achieving compliance with ISO 26262”, summarizes Anton Welte his experience with the MES Model Examiner ISO 26262 Classification Kit at ZF Friedrichshafen.

Tool qualification with MES and samoconsult

The MES Model Examiner ISO 26262 Classification Kit is the successful result of close cooperation between MES and samoconsult GmbH. The two Berlin-based companies have opted for cooperation in the field of tool qualification to combine their expertise of ISO 26262 and to integrate them into MES products.
