Gardena relies on Ruderer's adhesive know-how - smart bonding of sensor technology

Better to enjoy than to garden. Following this principle, Gardena GmbH has developed into Europe's market leader in gardening technology. The company became known in the 1960s for its innovative connector system for water hoses and garden tools. With the latest Gardena Smart Systems, the company has simplified garden maintenance even further and made it more sustainable in terms of the efficient use of water resources. Green spaces and gardens can now be watered and maintained automatically via the Gardena app - no matter where you are. At the heart of this "smart home system" is the Gardena Smart Sensor, which is positioned close to the roots of the plants to be watered. The sensor intelligently determines the moisture present in the soil and passes this information on to the app. Garden owners can access this measurement data at any time and thus provide their plants with the optimum amount of water. The success of this "smart" and, above all, water-saving method is based solely on the sensor's precise calculations. However, the reliability of the data requires that the sensitive components used outdoors are carefully fixed and protected. This was achieved with the high-performance technicoll® 9411 adhesive from RUDERER Klebetechnik GmbH, which fully met the required outdoor requirements, such as resistance to ageing, temperature and water, even under the toughest environmental conditions.

A water-saving system. A waterproof adhesive.

In its search for the optimum adhesive for manufacturing the "Gardena Smart Sensor 19040" soil moisture sensor, the Gardena company found what it was looking for in the adhesives expert RUDERER. The sensor is at the heart of the Gardena Smart System. It is based on the latest technology and enables fully automatic, professional and intelligent plant and garden care. The Gardena Smart Sensor measures both the temperature and the soil moisture in the root area of plants and sends the measurement results to an app. By intelligently linking weather forecasts and schedules, users can give their plants exactly the amount of water they need to thrive. Ideally, this can save up to 70 percent of water. For this water-saving system to work properly, the sensitive electronics of the sensor must be perfectly fixed and sealed. As the sensor is inserted into a plant bed, flower pot or lawn and protrudes about 20 mm from the ground, the right adhesive must be able to withstand the thermal and mechanical requirements on the one hand and be flexible enough to attach the circuit board for the electronic components, consisting of hardened epoxy resin and glass fiber fabric, to a plastic housing with long-term stability on the other.

Excellent environmental compatibility

The plastic housing, which is connected to the composite material, is made of the thermoplastic ABS. To ensure that the fine structures of the electronic components are not permanently damaged by wind and weather or temperature fluctuations, it was particularly important that the adhesive used bonds the two materials together with absolute dimensional stability. In addition, maximum elasticity, vibration and deformation resistance as well as high resistance to environmental influences were required. Several adhesives were considered for the requirements. The fast-curing 2-component MMA adhesive technicoll® 9411 achieved the best results in the tests. It scored particularly well with its rapid curing, high adhesive strength and very good resistance to water, ageing, media and temperature. Thanks to its flexible properties, technicoll® 9411 withstood all dynamic loads and proved to be absolutely resistant to UV radiation, heat, cold, wetness and moisture. The high viscosity of this flexible and stress-equalizing high-performance adhesive also enabled efficient and precise adhesive application without unwanted run-off.

Sustainable bonding = sustainable water saving.

Thanks to the fast curing and easy handling of the 2-component MMA adhesive technicoll® 9411, users benefit from very short cycle times. In the automated production process at Gardena, this ensures greater process reliability and consistently high quality in the manufacture of the Gardena Smart Sensor. With technicoll® 9411, the garden technology specialist has not only succeeded in fixing the sensor components of its Gardena Smart System with long-term stability, but also in protecting them from humidity, rain and corrosion. The soil moisture sensor can therefore provide the irrigation computer with reliable data for smart, fully automated garden irrigation that is adapted to the respective weather conditions. Users, on the other hand, are spared the sweaty task of watering, which can be conveniently controlled remotely thanks to the sensor. This innovative watering method for economical and careful use of our water makes every garden more environmentally friendly and garden maintenance easier. And the plants will never lose their heads again, as they benefit from optimum, needs-based watering even in dry periods.
