Analytiqa: Logistics Bulletin: Friday 14th December
Press release from: Analytiqa
This week's Logistics Bulletin reports on a five-year, £150 million contract for DHL Exel Supply Chain with UK home and furniture retailer, MFI. DHL will invest more than £10.0 million (€13.8 million) of its own capital into the venture. The deal represents one of the biggest 'shared risk' partnerships the 3PL has ever entered into with a customer. In other contract news Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) is to provide freight consolidation services in China and Hong Kong for Shoe Carnival. MOL has been strategically promoting its Buyers or Ocean Consolidation Business (OCB) which is used by retailers in Europe and the US, who buy products manufactured in several plants, mainly in Asia. The products are consolidated into shipping containers at loading ports and then transported to their destinations.
Elsewhere this week, in M&A news from across various sectors of the supply chain, deals and developments feature BBI, D.Logistics, Agility, Old Dominion and Sinotrans, whilst with a more internal focus, there is a new brand architecture in place at Deutsche Bahn and Ryder has announced two share repurchase programmes. Distribution centre and logistics facility news has been made around the world, with developments for FedEx and OH Logistics in the US, The Co-operative Group, GAC Marine Logistics, Munich Airport, Huurre, Trans Poludnie and DHL in Europe; and ProLogis, GAC and CWT in Asia Pacific.
DHL signs five-year £150 million contract with MFI
DHL Exel Supply Chain announced a new five-year deal with MFI, the UK's leading home and furniture retailer, after successfully winning the contract to manage the high street giant's new distribution centre and home delivery operation. MFI recently re-launched itself after its 200-strong retail store business was acquired by specialist venture capitalist, Merchant Equity Partners.
Under the terms of the five-year contract, DHL will invest more than £10.0 million (€13.8 million) of its own capital into the venture. This investment will help to improve the information technology system which supports the new, streamlined picking and packing process in the warehouse, and also to develop additional warehouse space as MFI's product range increases.
On Friday 7 December, DHL and MFI opened a new, major distribution center in Yorkshire, which signifies the start of this new business relationship. The state-of-the-art 750,000 m2 distribution center in Thorne (South Yorkshire) cements a major breakthrough for DHL, as the deal represents one of the biggest 'shared risk' partnerships it has ever entered into with a customer.
DHL Exel Supply Chain has already completed a £13.2 million fit-out of the 750,000 m2 distribution centre and between now and February 2008, we will create 330 new specialist warehouse and administration positions.
