'Shooting Star of 2008': ADAC granted top marks and awarded a prize to Kaprun's Snow Park

Once a year the ADAC (Allgemeiner Deutscher Automobil-Club e.V.), Germany's and Europe's largest automobile club, publishes its ' reisemagazin Ski', one of the most widely regarded tourism magazines for the winter season. Before booking their winter holidays, about 1.8 million readers refer to this magazine to inform themselves about the news, facts and figures of the largest and most popular holiday destinations in Europe. For the current issue of 2008, the editors have put more than 40 destinations under the microscope. The result: internationally, Zell am See-Kaprun is among the top addresses!

The ADAC assessed the offers of renowned holiday destinations in Italy, France, Austria, and Switzerland and gave marks in eight different categories, among them 'Ski Alpin', 'Cross-country', 'Family', 'Diversity', 'Après-ski', and 'Mighty Midgets'. Another criterion for the jury were the 'Snow Parks' - and a clear winner was found: thanks to the new 'Mellow Park' on 3,203-metre-high Kitzsteinhorn the region was selected as the most attractive skiing area for snowboarders! In comparison to the competitors from Austria and Switzerland, Zell am See-Kaprun only had to yield the palm to the 'Snow Parks' in Mayrhofen, Austria, and in Laax, Switzerland. According to the report published by the ADAC, 'the first glacier skiing area in Austria has become an important centre for snowboarders in recent years.'

In the last of the eight categories, however, the region stands unrivalled: in the winter season of 2008, Zell am See-Kaprun may call itself 'Shooting Star of 2008'. Due to substantial investments into the infrastructure the region put all the other competitors in the shade - among them renowned regions like Hochpustertal (second place), Obergurgl/Hochgurgl (third place), Bradnertal Valley and Pizol in Switzerland. The key factors triggering the decision were the improvement of the pistes, the extension of existing and the construction of new lift and cable car facilities, and specials like the drive-in Intersport store at the upper station of Schmittenhöhe. Since November two new cable car facilities, the Breiteckbahn and the trassXpress, take skiers and snowboarders to the 77 kilometres of perfectly white pistes on the local mountain of Zell. According to ADAC 'reason enough for the jury to award the title 'Shooting Star of 2008' to Zell am See-Kaprun and Schmittenhöhe.'

This year, the committee consisted of 15 experienced winter experts. Besides journalists and experts of the tourism industry, Austria's most successful female ski racer Marlies Schild and Gustav Thöni, trainer of the World Cup winner and Olympic gold medallist Alberto Tomba, attended to the assessment and grading, which have been published in the 'Ski Guide' of the ADAC publishing house as well.

Together with Sabine and Frank, she has come to the region from Braunshardt in Germany to spend her holidays on
Tourism experts are looking forward to the 'castlecamp' at Kaprun from 13th Sept …
It is general practice among the visitors of a 'barcamp' to take home a sticker once the 'unconference' has finished. That way, the participants want to say, 'I was in on that.' The idea is not really new. For decades, travellers have collected that kind of souvenirs of their holiday destinations and stuck them to their suitcases. It's the 'barcamps' themselves that are new. They have only been organized for
Zell am See-Kaprun invite to an 'unconference' at the castle
Anyone who has ever been in the audience of a large conference, congress, or seminar, maybe even for several days in a row, knows that phenomenon only too well: there are set schedules to be followed, hours of talks and lots of useless information to be listened to.
