Bay Stage Live sets up the lighting display for Gasparilla Music Festival

Bay Stage Live, a leading live-event production and audio/visual company in Tampa, designs and executes the lighting production for the world renowned Gasparilla Music Festival (GMF) kicking off this weekend, February 16-18, 2024 in Tampa's Julian B. Lane Riverfront Park.

2024 marks the 13th year of GMF with 50 bands across five stages and with an expected attendance upwards of 70,000 people over the course of the three-day event. Planning for the largest festival yet, this year marks a new home at Julian B. Lane, just a short walk upriver from Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park and Kiley Garden where the nonprofit festival launched in 2012.

Greg Utley, director of creative services for Bay Stage Live has been overseeing GMF since the beginning when David Cox, executive director of Gasparilla Music Foundation, hired Bay Stage Live to manage the lighting back in 2012.

"David and I had worked together in the past and when he called me to design the lighting for the first ever Gasparilla Music Festival, it was a no-brainer. Him and his team are amazing to work with," shares Utley. "Gasparilla shines a world-wide light on Tampa. This festival is from Tampa, for Tampa and it's been an amazing ride watching it grow with new artists and more people each year," Utley continues.

New, third-generation co-owners of Bay Stage Live and sisters, Nicole Justo Idziak and Danielle Justo Sherwin, look forward to GMF each year since before owning Bay Stage Live, watching the teams lead by their parents put on the festival. "Our entire team has been hands-on with Gasparilla Music Festival since day one. It takes all of us to deliver what Tampa expects and deserves for each festival and we are so proud to be a part of its legacy," shares Justo Idziak.

The significant time it takes behind the scenes to plan, create and execute the production portion of GMF doesn't come without its challenges. "The biggest thing we plan for is the range of artists GMF brings. We need to take into consideration what every band needs to put on their own show considering each set and each performance requires completely different lighting. DJ sets are drastically different from a full band. We ensure the stage and lighting is designed specifically for each artist without changing it throughout the entirety of the festival," Utley adds.

As the festival has grown each year with the number of artists, stages, events and production needs, it takes almost a full year to plan for the next. "Once the festival is over, we immediately start planning for the next year. The Bay Stage Live team along with Dave and his GMF team discuss our likes and dislikes, what we can push to do more of and what we can do without, in addition to ways to make it bigger and better with new technologies and creative approaches," states Utley.

Just coming off the continuous event celebrations aboard the Jose Gasparilla II pirate ship that Bay Stage Live is in charge of full A/V production for, Greg Utley and the Bay Stage Live team are ready for what the 2025 Gasparilla season will bring.
