Fast Image and Video Upscaling From Self-Examples

05-02-2016 07:44 PM CET | IT, New Media & Software

Press release from: Yissum

Technology was invented by Prof Raanan Fattal and Gilad Freedman

The upscaling technology can upscale images and videos without the use of any external database of images. "In today's world of ever increasing resolution of screens there is a great need for high definition content. The challenge is how do you generate this high definition content?
Well according to this technology any input can be upscaled so fast that it can be done in real-time. "This is a true breakthrough that can be used but almost anyone on any device" Says Tamir Huberman, VP Business Development at Yissum.

Main Highlights of the Technology:

► Image upscaling, or enlargement of image size, results in blurring of edges and loss of image quality

► Although digital cameras produce high-resolution images, there still exist huge numbers of low resolution images as well as low-grade sensors found in mobile devices and surveillance systems that produce low-resolution images and video frames that require resolution

The Innovation:

► New image processing algorithm based on example-based super-resolution that results in a high-quality and efficient single-image upscaling technique

► Image upsampling exploits local scale-similarity in natural images. When downscaled, the patches (yellow squares) are very similar to their cropped version (red squares).

Key Features of the Technology:

► Algorithm produces high-quality, sharp images

► Reduces the process search time without compromising quality

► Simple, efficient, and trivially parallel algorithm enables increase in the resolution of video sequences with no algorithmic modifications and at reasonable running times
