For watching videos everywhere and sharing them instantly without cellular and without wi-fi infrastructure, there is no need to wait until smartphones will be equipped with the recently announced Wi-Fi Aware standard. The videmic app provides mobile ad-hoc communication for instantly sharing videos between commodity smartphones; that is videmic can transmit HD videos of size of several hundred MB from phone to phone within seconds.
Recently, the Wi-Fi Alliance announced the certification of a future standard for wireless communication, called Wi-Fi Aware for proximity-based social networking (see e.g. [1]). In the future, according to the Wi-Fi Alliance Wi-Fi Aware shall enable users to find and share media content as audio and video files within wi-fi range (ie about 100 ft.) without GPS, cellular or wi-fi infrastructure. In a YouTube video [2], the Wi-Fi Alliance outlines the use cases of Wi-Fi Aware: sharing data of common interest between passengers in a train, at a major event like a very popular sports event, a music festival, and other scenarios alike, where mobile internet reaches its capacity limits.
However, for watching videos everywhere and sharing them instantly without cellular and without wi-fi infrastructure, there is no need to wait until smartphones will be equipped with the Wi-Fi Aware standard for wireless communication. The videmic GmbH [3], a German startup based in Berlin just released the ad-hoc video app videmic as private BETA in the Google Play Store. As major innovation, the videmic app incorporates propriety system software for utilizing the wi-fi communication interface (ie IEEE 802.11ac or newer wireless communication technology), with which each modern smartphone is equipped, for transmitting video files from device to device. Already now without Wi-Fi Aware!
Furthermore, the videmic app is much more than video sharing. In fact, videmic aims at proximity-based social peer-to-peer networking for videos. Thus, videmic possesses viral properties and is self-acting. That is, as soon as videmic users meet other persons with the videmic app and matching interests, videos will be distributed without user interaction. Furthermore, users needn't open the app for receiving videos from other videmic users. They just have to carry their smartphones with videmic in their pockets. The YouTube video [4] illustrates some of the use cases of the videmic app.
Dr. Christoph Lindemann, angel investor and tech advisor of videmic, has the vision: “the rapidly increasing memory capacity of smartphones (most current phones have16 GB and more, there are already phones available with 128 GB) enables mobile users to carry a substantial amount of HD video content on their smartphones. videmic completes this vision by providing mobile ad-hoc communication for instantly sharing videos; that is videmic can transmit HD videos of size of several hundred MB from phone to phone within seconds. Without cost for cellular!” Thus, mobile users can watch and share videos everywhere without cost for cellular rather than uploading and streaming via the mobile Internet as the well known apps YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Vine, Periscope and many others are currently operating .
How to Get the videmic App
Register with your e-mail address at the web page [5]. You will receive within 24 hours a link where to download the app from the Play Store.
The videmic app is running on commodity smartphone with Android 4.4 and higher.

videmic is a Berlin-based startup developing an ad-hoc video app beyond streaming. videmic users can share videos everywhere and instantly within 100 ft perimeter without cellular, wi-fi, or any server.
