Willstätt, Yverdon 19th May 2015 – Leclanché SA (SIX Swiss Exchange: LECN), a specialist in the production of large-format lithium-ion cells and energy storage systems, is introducing two new residential and small business storage systems for photovoltaic installations at this year's Intersolar Europe. The energy storage systems use proven lithium-ion technology. Europe's leading exhibition for the solar industry takes place in Munich between 10th and 12th June. Leclanché will unveil the new systems in Hall B1 at Stand 259.

The storage specialist has developed a product family around its tried and tested premium solution TiBox. Like their precursor, both systems are made in Germany. The new battery storage systems comply with the directives of the Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW) - the German bank for reconstruction. The battery storage systems come with a seven-year, current-value replacement guarantee, and, thanks to their modular design, can be easily extended.

The smaller version has a storage capacity of 2.7 kWh. With this model, the Apollion Box, Leclanché is particularly targeting users seeking to replace lead batteries with a lithium-ion alternative. The system, which weighs 28 kilograms, does not require a charge controller and is perfect for off grid solutions. The Swiss manufacturer specifies a depth of discharge (DoD) of 90 percent and a life span of some 4,000 cycles.

With a storage capacity of 6.3 kWh, the capacity level of the larger model Apollion Cube is significantly above that of Apollion Box. DoD is 80 percent, though in this case life expectancy increases to 5,000 charge cycles. For its market launch, the system can be operated with an SMA Sunny Island or Nedap Power Router as the charge controller. Other options are to follow.

Both, Apollion Cube and Apollion Box are stackable and allow the customer to create the size of its own storage system.

Opening new markets
"These two new storage systems will help to promote the democratization of the energy-supply," says Anil Srivastava, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at Leclanché. "The TiBox was the starting point and is a premium solution for users with particularly high requirements like 15.000 cycles or performance warranties of 10 years. With the addition of our new products, this system family now addresses a wider market. Safety, performance and quality all play a significant role in these new extensions to our product portfolio."

The storage systems are just two of the many new products that Leclanché will be presenting. This is in addition to the company's new graphite/NMC cell, which was unveiled earlier this year. According to the company, the TiBox, on sale since 2014, has received resounding approval from customers. The system comprises 44 large-format lithium-ion-titanate cells with built-in electronics and a software-control system that was developed in-house. The cells have a life expectancy of 20 years. With some 15,000 cycles possible, they are the longest-lasting batteries on the market.

Leclanché's strategy is one of the leading lithium-ion cell producers and solution providers for energy storage systems in Europe. Its strategic priorities are to develop and market energy storage products for home, industrial markets and grid applications and to grow its existing businesses of developing portable energy storage systems for military, medical and industrial applications. It also includes providing a range of professional energy storage systems to a diversified customer base. Through participation in research consortia focusing on hybrid and E-mobility applications, Leclanché is positioned to take advantage of new market opportunities.

Through a unique, patented ceramic separator technology and focus on lithium-titanate technology, Leclanché manufactures large-format lithium-ion cells, optimized for safety and cycle-life, in a fully automated production process. The newly installed production line will have an annual capacity of one million cells or 76 MWh.

Leclanché was founded in 1909 in Yverdon-les-Bains. Through the integration of a spin-off from the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft in 2006, the company evolved from a traditional battery manufacturer to become a leading developer and manufacturer of lithium-ion cells in Europe. Leclanché currently employs more than 100 staff and is listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange (LECN). The company has its headquarters in Yverdon-les-Bains (Switzerland) and production facilities in Willstätt (Germany).
