Robot Matches Objects in 3D with One Camera

Press release from: MVTec Software GmbH
The robot is equipped with a gripper and one camera in the center of the ring lighting. The image processing software exactly detects any 3D poses and orientations of objects and subsequently controls their sorted placement.

(openPR) - At the VISION show 2007 (Neue Messe Stuttgart, Nov 6-8, 2007), MVTec Software GmbH, Munich, Germany, showcases for the first time an industrial robot that detects objects in any 3D position with only one camera, controlled by a standard machine vision software library.

To give an example by a typical industry product (in this case a fuse switch, see figure), MVTec shows how the robot works: The machine vision software program under HALCON’s new version 8.0 knows the object’s CAD model and pre-calculates all possible positions as 2D projections. Thus, the software is able to clearly identify any object in its arbitrarily orientated pose, to subsequently grip, and to orderly deposit it.

Because of the speed of HALCON’s so-called „3rd Generation Matching“, also real-time applications are possible. This 3D object recognition is not only fast and reliable, but also robust against variations of illumination.

HALCON’s 3D object recognition marks a totally new possibility for robotics. From now on, time-consuming programming and two-camera stereo applications become redundant. Vision-guided robots can detect and grip loose positioned objects by standard software with only one camera.
