Regensburg patient for five years on a ventricular assist device
The patient’s story of the 54-year-old patient goes back a few years. After he had a strong flu in 2006, Max K.’s right heart muscle was damaged. He needed a defibrillator, which helped him for a while. Three years later however, when Mr. and Mrs. K. had just returned from their vacation at the Baltic Sea, Mr. K. could hardly breathe anymore. In the hospital he had to be resuscitated. He was immediately flown to the University Hospital Regensburg by a rescue helicopter and underwent surgery. A dilated cardiomyopathy was diagnosed, meaning that his heart muscle was severely enlarged. The INCOR® VAD was implanted on August 21st 2009. Since that day a pump which is made of titan and located in Mr. K’s thorax supports the function of his own heart and pumps approximately five liter blood per minute.
The patient has adjusted to life on the VAD. He is living a relatively normal life and continues to be optimistic: “I take things as they come. One has to make the best of the situation and should not think too much about it. Instead one should find a solution.” Max K. is very grateful to the clinic team and the INCOR® system for the additional life years and his current condition.
