Stiebel Eltron optimizes with DataVard BW Fitness Test its SAP NetWeaver® Business Warehouse

Query runtime reduced from up to 5 minutes to 12 seconds

Heidelberg (Germany), December 18, 2013 – Stiebel Eltron, one of the leading manufacturers of domestic and system technology, optimized its SAP NetWeaver® Business Warehouse with the software tool DataVard BW Fitness Test. The tool was developed by the software and consulting company DataVard to optimize system performance and decrease data volume. It generated actionable recommendations derived from in depth analysis and benchmarking. After the implementation of these recommendations the query runtime improved from up to 5 minutes to 12 seconds and the data volume was reduced by one third. In addition Stiebel Eltron was able to build up internal know-how to further improve system performance.

Stiebel Eltron rates among market and technological leaders in the areas domestic technology and renewable energies. The medium-sized company has a business presence with over 3.000 employees in 120 countries. To evaluate and interprete company data more than 400 users from differing divisions utilize SAP NetWeaver® Business Warehouse. Per day almost 400 reports are called up and over 300 reports are sent via Email. The high data volume caused delays in the daily evaluation process; partially the evaluation could not start until 8am as the extractions from the SAP source systems took too long. In addition the queries ran too slow and results were at times only available 5 minutes after retrieval.

In order to resolve this problem Stiebel Eltron decided to use the tool DataVard BW Fitness Test to analyze system performance. The tool nominated by Gartner in the “Cool Vendors in the SAP Ecosystem, 2013” report identifies strengths and weaknesses of SAP systems based on 73 key indicators. These indicators are then compared with data of more than 150 SAP systems and offer actionable recommendations. “We were especially convinced by the excellent solutions provided by DataVard and the short reaction time”, said Steffen Weise, who at Stiebel Eltron supports together with Christoph Giefers the SAP NetWeaver® Business Warehouse. “The wide range of key indicators and benchmarks influenced our decision not to forget the attractive price-performance ratio.”

Stiebel Eltron's aim for the project was to find ways to reduce database size and to optimize time regarding data transfer and reporting. In the future, data loading processes were to be finished by 6am and query runtimes were to be reduced by 30 percent. In addition, the BW Fitness Test provided a detailed summary on the strengths and weaknesses of the BW system. The import of the tool’s transportation into the system went smoothly. Stiebel Eltron received a detailed evaluation protocol with numerous recommendations that were mainly self-implementable and the overall effort for Stiebel Eltron was only five working days.

Finally the BW Fitness Test was used once more to monitor the achievements: The data volume has been reduced by one third, the query runtimes have been accelerated to 12 to 15 seconds. The conclusion was therefore very positive: “With BW Fitness Test not only did we implement recommendations but also built up know-how on how to optimize our Business Warehouse“, resumed Steffen Weise. For the division itself the project has also been a complete success. “Due to better query runtimes, we were able to increase user acceptance and gain new clients internally who have been carrying out their reporting with other tools”, said Christoph Giefers. One and a half years later the data volume accessed by the queries has grown twice its size but the data loading processes have further shortened due to system improvements. Stiebel Eltron plans to use BW Fitness Test once more to put the Business Warehouse to the test again.
