It used to be that awnings were primarily a technical product that had a specific purpose to fulfil: they had to protect users from the sun. But over time, attraction, value and identification with form and colours also became increasingly important to those in search of an awning. This is why markilux awnings therefore have to correspond to the aesthetics of contemporary architecture and, in the best scenario, become the highlight on a building.

50 years ago, awning specialist markilux embarked on a voyage of discovery to get to where it is today. From the very beginning, the company set great store by striving for both quality and appearance in its products. "Quality is a way of differentiating yourself in the market. This must be reflected not only in the functionality but also in the appearance," explains Michael Gerling, Director of R&D and Production.

Specialist for designer awnings
Over the course of time, the company has increasingly honed the interplay between technical sophistication and beautiful appearance. The aim was to give the brand an aesthetic expression. This is an essential part of the creative process from the very first idea to the finished product. For this, markilux is guided by modern architecture, contemporary product design and current colour trends. "After so many years of product development, we now see ourselves as a specialist for designer awnings," says Mr Gerling.

Appearance reflects quality
Particularly the markilux 970, but also all models of the MX series, such as the MX-1 compact, the MX-3 and the new MX-2, represent today's typical markilux look. This includes the interplay between curves and simple straight or cubic shapes, accentuating features of the awning by using attractive colours and special material surfaces, reflecting the high quality and emphasising the exclusive, individual nature of the products. Mr Gerling believes that this is instrumental in the brand's success: "When it comes to the end consumer, you score points above all with the appearance of a product and also with the option of being able to adapt it to meet your own requirements to a certain extent. And that's exactly what we offer," he explains.

Rethinking form and expression
Developing a design with a company's special signature as part of the brand message is a long process, which entails constant observation of the market, a creative development team and experimentation with exciting materials and surfaces, as well as a comparison with what is technically possible and the motivation to constantly reinterpret the shape of an awning.

Special touch thanks to good design
This design style also includes modern awning covers, which as conspicuous and effective textile colour surfaces help shape the overall appearance of an awning. Here, the company places great emphasis on patterns that are both timeless and trendy. "Our awnings have a consistent look. They are matched to furniture, garden features and various styles of building. Because that is what end consumers are looking for," says Michael Gerling.
