Raytheon Anschütz to unveil Navigation Simulator at CANSEC

The German navigation system manufacturer Raytheon Anschütz GmbH in partnership with Canadian-based Virtual Marine Technology (VMT) has developed an embedded, simulation-based training system for the company’s Integrated Navigation System. The new simulator platform will be unveiled at the CANSEC 2013 Defense and Security Exposition, May 29 – 30, in Ottawa, Canada.

The comprehensive training solution incorporates a complete set of scenarios, environmental conditions, geographic navigation options, and vessels types to simulate a wide range of training exercises and mission objectives. Fully integrated with Raytheon Anschütz’s Synapsis Intelligent Bridge Control System, the training system leverages the platform to provide operators effective and efficient real-world training with the actual navigation system.

“This new functionality, developed with Virtual Marine Technology, provides a higher degree of realism than traditional shore-based training – delivering an innovative solution to improve the quality and effectiveness of the training,” said Raytheon Anschütz’s Richard Waldron, manager of business development for Canada. “This simulation system project extends our successful technology development partnership with VMT, the benefits of which transfer to our current and future customer base.”

A flexible solution, the simulator can be carried on-board a ship in harbor or installed on deployed ships, eliminating the need to only conduct shore-based operator training. As an option, where shore-based training is required, the simulator features an upgraded visualization system to provide the realism to support effective, land-based training as well.

Ideally suited for small ships and large-deck platforms of commercial and naval fleets, Raytheon Anschütz’s integrated bridge and navigation systems are widely deployed, proven and operational onboard more than 750 commercial and naval vessels around the world.

At CANSEC 2013, Raytheon Anschütz will demonstrate the Synapsis Intelligent Bridge Control System, showcasing its extensive features and capabilities to attending customers, dignitaries and visitors. The Synapsis bridge is an ideal candidate system for Canada’s upcoming Arctic Offshore Patrol Ships, Joint Support Ships, Canadian Surface Combatants and Coast Guard Offshore Patrol Ships.

The Synapsis bridge system features scalable, multifunctional workstations that integrate the radars, electronic chart display and information system (ECDIS), ship control data (conning), as well as various sensors for target detection, heading, position and other navigation data, and the steering control system.
The data is distributed consistently through a redundant Ethernet bus and is stored independently at each workstation. System health monitoring of status and performance of all workstations is automatic to further enhance data availability and functionality on the bridge.

The use of standard hardware and an innovative software framework allows the flexible configuration of systems for any ship type or size, from patrol vessels and support ships to corvettes, frigates, destroyers and aircraft carriers. The innovative system architecture also supports the integration of additional applications into the bridge and navigation system to support future mission needs or requirements. Such applications could include ice radar or small target tracker displays, command and control systems, military chart systems, platform management or combat management systems.

Raytheon Anschütz GmbH is a subsidiary of Raytheon Company and a leading supplier of Navigation Systems and Integrated Bridge Systems for all kinds of commercial vessels, specialized vessels, mega yachts, and naval ships. More than 30,000 vessels worldwide are sailing with Raytheon Anschütz navigation systems and are being served by a global network of own subsidiaries, e.g. in Shanghai, Singapore and San Diego, and more than 200 specialized service stations. In 1905, Raytheon Anschütz was founded under the name Anschütz & Co in Kiel, Germany, just one year after Dr. Hermann Anschütz-Kaempfe invented the gyro compass.
