(openPR) - Dresden, January 5th, 2006 - The graduate of art Matthias Haase showed aside his big sized oil paintings the SMS chat sculpture “Der Bote” at the diploma exhibition of the University of Fine Art Dresden. This interactive object consists of a steel made table with a screen, a projector and a computer with an attached GSM module to receive text messages. A common SIM card and SMS Chatwall software developed by Haase & Martin GbR enables the installation to communicate via SMS as a part of an art exhibition. Visitors could send a short message from their mobile phone to a phone number showed on the screen. Their SMS were broadcasted seconds later, letting the visitor take part in the exhibition. The system responded with an SMS with a short text by the author including information on title and place of the exhibition.
International blogs like www.textually.org and www.engadget.com reported on “Der Bote”, mentioning the system's phone number. This lead to participating distant message writers apart from local visitors. One third of the over all 158 messages is of international origin. US, UK and Sweden showed greatest participation. Other countries of origin form a travel around the world: Australia, Norway, Belgium, South Africa, Poland, Bosnia, New Zealand and Kenya sent comments on the SMS projector sculpture. Many messages contained greetings like “Hi there from London UK. Hope your enjoying your time in the art gallery. Be good and have fun. :)” or “Greetings to everyone from a cold and cloudy Nairobi, in Kenya! I hope the exhibition has been enjoyable. :-) Jonathan”. Some SMS solved questions on art in general. An American sender wrote: “Art is about emotion, this is cold.”
