Press release from: Islamic Circle of North America

This Saturday afternoon the Jersey City, New Jersey chapter of the Islamic Circle of North America in conjunction with ICNA Relief USA will be hosting its annual Eid Meat Distribution in the wake of the continued reconstruction efforts post Hurricane Sandy. Over 500lbs of meat was donated by local Muslims during the Eid-ul-Adha holiday and will be distributed to victims of the storm on Saturday, December 8th in Jersey City.

"Meat is expensive and many New Jersey residents have been struggling to restock their freezers after the storm," explains Azeem Khan, a member of the organization, "We hope that this distribution will make the holiday season a little bit easier for some families."

Every year, during the Eid-ul-Adha holiday, Muslim families across the United States give meat in charity as a reminder of the trials faced by their prophet Abraham. Often the meat would be distributed outside the US in efforts to give to the poorest of individuals. This year, however, the devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy has served as a reminder that there are many people within the US that are also in need.

"ICNA Relief is seeing a record number of contributions this year because of the storm," says staff member Umber Siddiqi. "Muslim families are seeing this as their opportunity to make a difference in their local communities and be part of the reconstruction efforts."

ICNA Relief has already been heavily involved in Sandy Relief and Reconstruction efforts. Coordinating with FEMA and working with various relief organizations, ICNA Relief has distributed thousands of hot meals, cleaning supplies, warm clothing, blankets, and heaters to some of the hardest hit communities in Atlantic City, NJ, Staten Island, NY, Rockaway Beach, NY and Brighton Beach, NY. They have also organized hundreds of volunteers to assist in the clean up efforts.
