TYPO3 CMS 6.0 is “Back to the Future”

TYPO3 CMS 6.0 is “Back to the Future”

Baar, 2012-11-27
“Back to the Future” is the theme of version 6.0 of the successful Content Management System TYPO3. Version 5 was completely skipped to avoid confusion with “TYPO3 Neos” which is developed in parallel and previously had the codename “TYPO3 5.0” for a long time. TYPO3 Version 6.0's main focus is to be future-proof. Its source code was substantially improved and parts were even completely rewritten. TYPO3 Version 6.0 is definitely “back in the future”.

Files in the Cloud
With the introduction of a “File Abstraction Layer” (FAL), TYPO3 can now store files not only locally on the webserver but also in various other “Storages” (e.g. in the cloud). Drivers for WebDAV and Amazon S3 are already available and additional drivers (e.g. for Dropbox) are under development.
Files that are used more than once on a website are no longer copied but referenced. In addition, user-defined meta-data can be attached to any file. This meta-data is centrally managed and is therefore available wherever a file is used. This not only makes handling for editors easier but also allows the usage of modern cloud storage technology by all users.

Better code quality through new Quality Assurance Guidelines
With the introduction of new Quality Assurance Guidelines, TYPO3's code quality has reached a new level. For the first time with TYPO3 Version 6.0, approximately 5,000 unit tests will automatically be run after each change during development. Additionally no piece of code will be added to the TYPO3 core that doesn’t pass a series of code-style-tests successfully. These mechanisms not only increase the overall code quality but also facilitate the integration of code written by new contributors.

Code Cleanup and Namespaces
“Back in the Future” the developers spared no efforts to tidy up the core. The source code was simplified radically or even completely rewritten in many places. The well-known TYPO3 Extension Manager was completely rewritten based on Extbase.
The introduction of namespaces and the resulting renaming of classes lay the foundation for future development based on modern standards.

For many years, TYPO3 has been one of the most successful CMS in the German market. With all the improvements coming with TYPO3 Version 6.0, TYPO3 demonstrates again that even an established system can adopt start of the art technology and continue to shine.
