Press release from: Sangam University
Bhilwara Rajasthan Sangam University - United Nations Day 2012
Bhilwara Rajasthan Sangam University - United Nations Day 2012
With the ratification of this founding document by the majority of its signatories, including the five permanent members of the Security Council, the United Nations officially came into being on this date 24 October in 1945.

The UN has 4 main purposes: a) To keep peace throughout the world; b) To develop friendly relations among nations; c) To help nations work together to improve the lives of poor people, to conquer hunger, disease and illiteracy, and to encourage respect for each other’s rights and freedoms; and d) To be a centre for harmonizing the actions of nations to achieve these goals.

The six main bodies of the UN include the General Assembly (193 member states), Security Council (5 Permanent members and 10 non permanent members), Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) (54 members), International Court of Justice (15 judges), Trusteeship council and the Secretariat. It is indeed a matter of pride that India is one among the 10 non permanent members in Security Council and Hon’ble Justice Dalveer Bhandari from India is one of the 15 judges in International Court of Justice.

The work of the United Nations reaches every corner of the globe. Although best known for peacekeeping, peace building, conflict prevention and humanitarian assistance, there are many other ways the United Nations and its System (specialized agencies, funds and programmes) affect the lives of citizens across the globe and make the world a better place. The UN works on a broad range of fundamental issues, from sustainable development, environment and refugees protection, disaster relief, counter terrorism, disarmament and non-proliferation, to promoting democracy, human rights, gender equality and the advancement of women, governance, economic and social development and international health, clearing landmines, expanding food production, and more, in order to achieve its goals and coordinate efforts for a safer world for this and future generations.

On the occasion of United Nations Day, Prof BR Natarajan President – Vice Chancellor Sangam University Bhilwara shared with the students the significance of the day 24 October including the message of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon which goes as "We are living through a period of profound turmoil, transition and transformation. Insecurity, inequality and intolerance are spreading. Global and national institutions are being put to the test. With so much at stake, the United Nations must keep pace across the spectrum of its activities - peace, development, human rights, the rule of law, the empowerment of the world's women and youth." Prof Natarajan urged the students to understand the history and purpose of the UN Charter including the structure and organization of UN as it is very vital for becoming a global citizen.
