ima Staff Member Gets Second in Age Group in San Diego Classic Triathlon
Press release from: IMA
ima’s Drew Vanderwert participated in the San Diego Classic Triathlon held at the Historic Liberty station in Point Loma, San Diego. The weather was absolutely perfect for the Olympic distance triathlon including a 1500 meter swim, 40k Bike, and a 10k run. “My goal was to do the race in under 2hrs 20min, I knew I could place fairly well with that time.” Drew’s final time was 2 hrs 17 min and 52 seconds placing him second in his age group and 22nd overall. There were 80 people in his age group (30-34), and around 740 people who completed the Olympic distance.
This was Drew’s first Olympic distance triathlon, although he has done several sprint distance triathlons. His strongest event is the swim, putting him out in front from the beginning. “I had a very strong swim and had a lot of gas in the tank at the end of the swim, which I was able to carry over into the 25 mile bike where I held a 22 mph average.” The bike was a constant up and down, with very little flat riding, not a typical for a triathlon. Typically courses are a little more flat; however, climbing is one of Drew’s strengths. The run is where Drew still feels he needs work, and, in the past it has taken his body a little while to settle into the run. However, he was able to pick up the run in this race quite rapidly, and he was able to hold a 7 min 27sec pace for 10K.
Drew trained three months, almost daily, with some two-a-days work outs with swimming or running in the morning and biking or running in the evenings. At the peak he was riding 40 miles each night and running 3-5 miles afterwards. He did quite a few "Bricks" (Bike-Run-Ick) to train the transition from biking to running.
ima is proud of Drew as he exemplifies a healthy lifestyle reflected in ima’s corporate culture. ima is also sponsoring Drew along with Aaron Olson and Joe Perez at the upcoming Newport Beach Triathlon.

At ima, we are artists and business people.
We have a gift of imagining beauty and crafting opportunities. We approach each assignment with a contagious enthusiasm. We bring depth of experience, from large-scale master planning and engineering, to product selection and site placement.
Landscape architecture is a professional discipline that combines the beauty of the natural environment with an ability to improve the communities and places where people congregate, interact and live. Our work amazes and entertains thousands of people a day.
We thrive in collaboration and are energized by new ideas. Our designs feature a strong concept, a good idea and a little soul. That’s why they endure and improve over time. And, that’s why our prestigious clients keep coming back.
We don’t believe in form without substance. Our work addresses not only site function, but also a greater, more spiritual element. We believe that landscape architecture enriches the human experience by making people feel good about their surroundings and in turn, about themselves. Imagine, if everyone felt better about themselves, how much more receptive and open they would be to explore and participate in a community experience whether in a shopping mall, a downtown streetscape or a tropical resort. And we believe if everyday our plazas, gardens and streetscapes move just a few people toward goodness, then we have truly succeeded.
