Concerto Köln: Launch of the second USA tour in 2012/Opera project “Artaserse” in various European countries

Press release from: OPHELIAS Culture PR
A few weeks ago, Concerto Köln returned from their South American tour which ended with two acclaimed final concerts in the Teatro Municipal in Santiago de Chile. The musicians will be flying over the Atlantic again very soon for the launch of their second USA tour in 2012 beginning in Boston on Saturday, October 27th. Their first tour in April of 2012 led Concerto Köln to Jackson, the Library of Congress in Washington and to the renowned Walt Disney Hall in Los Angeles. On an international level, Concerto Köln once again consolidates its standing as the only German Cultural Ambassador of the EU.

Concerto Köln begins its second series of concerts in the USA with a performance in Boston’s Emmanuel Church on Saturday, October 27th. On the following day, October 28th, the orchestra makes a guest appearance at The Morgan Library & Museum in New York. Both of these concerts take place as a part of the Boston Early Music Festival. Five further performances lead the Cultural Ambassador of the EU to towns and metropoles along the Atlantic and Pacific coasts. Concerto Köln makes appearances on the East Coast in Charlottesville on Tuesday, October 30th, as well as in Hampton on Wednesday, October 31st, before venturing the 5000 kilometres out west for performances on California’s coast. Concerts in San Diego on Nov. 2nd, Berkeley on Nov. 3rd and in Los Angeles on Nov. 4th round off the tour. The exclusively Baroque program includes works by Handel, Vivaldi, Telemann and dall’Abaco, features instrumental soloists Cordula Breuer (recorder and traverso), Marion Moonen (traverso) and Yves Bertin (bassoon) and is led by concertmaster, Mayumi Hirasaki.

In Europe, the orchestra presents a non-staged opera production featuring an all-star cast. Four of the currently most internationally-acclaimed countertenors perform together on stage: Philippe Jaroussky, Max Emanuel Cencic, Franco Fagioli and Valer Barna-Sabadus can be heard in Nancy, France performing the rediscovered opera “Artaserse” by Leonardo Vinci (approx. 1690-1730). Under the baton of Diego Fasolis, the Nov. 2nd Premiere is followed by additional Nancy performances on November 4th, 6th, 8th and 9th before the production heads off to Vienna on Nov. 20th, Lausanne on Nov. 23rd and 25th, Bilbao on the Nov. 30th, Paris on Dec. 11th and 12th and Cologne on Dec. 17th, 19th and 27th. A recent yet already enthusiastically critiqued world premiere CD release by Virgin Classics documents this unique project.

Concerto Köln is considered one of Cologne’s musical flagships, annually performing over 80 concerts worldwide. Responsible for the artistic direction is Martin Sandhoff who is also one of the founding members of the ensemble. For larger-scale productions, Concerto Köln collaborates with guest conductors such as Ivor Bolton, Peter Dijkstra, Kent Nagano, Daniel Harding and René Jacobs as well as renowned artists including Vivica Genaux, Philippe Jaroussky, Andreas Staier and Harald Schmidt. A discography of more than 50 CDs and various awards including the Midem Classical Award, the Grammy and the Echo Klassik are
testimonials to the success of this self-governing orchestra.
