The most eye catching feature of a Maltese fishing village is the luzzu, a small high-powered fishing boat painted in dazzling hues of red, blue, green and yellow. The boat may well have the name of a Catholic saint, but it will also be adorned, on either side of the prow, with the carved painted eyes of a pagan god.
The custom of carving the ever watchful eye, to ward off the devil and give protection to the little fishing boats, goes back centuries. The eye is that of Osiris, one of the most important god of ancient Egypt. Legend has it that Osiris was drowned by god Seth, who tore the corpse into 14 pieces and flung them over the earth. The goddess Isis found and buried the pieces, giving new life to Osiris. From then on he remained in the underworld as ruler of the dead and as the power that grants all life, springing through the soil from the underworld. Egyptian dynastic rulers believed that they became one with Osiris at death and thus become immortal.
To spot Malta’s traditional fishing boats, look in the busy harbours of St Julian’s Bay, Marsaxlokk and in the Blue Grotto. Off-season you can see luzzu owners in the boatyards, touching up the scratches, adding a lick of paint or carefully defining that precious Eye of Osiris.
