NewSat Ltd, based in Melbourne, is looking at servicing rural clients cut-off from terrestrial communications infrastructure, and providing broadband access to remote premises beyond the fibre footprint of the NBN project. The VSAT Broadband service of the company currently relies on teleport facilities in Perth, Western Australia, and Adelaide, South Australia.

Although the National Broadband Project will look into nationwide coverage, remote regions in the vast outback, outlying islands off the coast of the continent, and some inaccessible rural communities will be beyond the reach of telecom providers. NewSat Ltd is banking on its satellite broadband solutions to connect these clients to high-speed Internet communications.

Remote connectivity issues can be served with the technology from Australia's independent satellite company. The service supports over 4,000 satellite communications services across the globe, and is compatible with the more popular VSAT platforms from iDirect and LinkStar.

Clients who wish to maximize the service may also use it to set-up remote Wide Area Networks, alongside voice and video applications, hosted services, and data and telemetry solutions.

Satellite bandwidth demand has surged over the past five years as mobile applications rise alongside the popularity of personal computing devices like smartphones and tablets. The Federal Government recently announce plans to revitalize its space policy and focus on a satellite utilisation programme that would develop the industry.

Many rural towns in the country have been relying on poor DSL connections for Internet access and remote connectivity. Aside from the NBN project, local operators like NewSat are looking into covering the last mile through satellite technology.

NewSat is already planning to increased bandwidth capacity too. Earlier this year, construction of the the Jabiru 1 passed the preliminary design review. The satellite, slated for a 2014 launch, will be Australia's first fully-owned commercial satellite, supporting not only NewSat's services, but the country's new space policy.
